Autumn fishing

October, November, and December are excellent months for sea trout fishing on Saaremaa.

Most larger sea trout have already begun their migration to late-autumn spawning rivers by this time. During autumn, they gradually lose their silver shine and take on the browner coloration typical of spawning fish. A protective layer forms on their skin, helping to guard against injuries during the spawning migration.

In autumn, the best time to fish is early morning, when the cold night cools down the water. Fish move into shallow areas and tend to stay where the water is more turbulent, as this helps to cool it. They also stay closer to river mouths, searching for their specific spawning river, which they recognize by the water’s chemistry.

The best fishing times are mornings and evenings, as cooler night air lowers water temperatures and evening drops in temperature make fish more active. In autumn, fish move around a lot while searching for spawning rivers. This means a coastal spot with no fish one day can be the best spot the next. Peninsulas extending into the sea are excellent locations for finding migrating fish. Patience is key—wait for fish to pass by.

Lures

In autumn, brighter, more provocative colors and lures with a smaller but aggressive action tend to work well.

Main tips for autumn fishing:

  1. Autumn seas make submerged rocks slippery, so extra caution is needed when wading.

  2. Watch the water surface carefully, as fish tend to jump more often in autumn.

  3. Be more attentive when hooking fish, as autumn fish are less aggressive when striking.

  4. Stay near river mouths, as fish are more concentrated there.

  5. Look for coasts with offshore winds, as they push warm surface water away and bring colder water up from below.

  6. Start casting already from the shoreline, as fish are often in shallow water after cool nights.
